Our workshops emphasized multimodal possibilities, so the project draws on research indicating that elementary students are able to demonstrate their understanding of science concepts in a variety of ways (Tippett, ) as well as research on DI in the context of language and literacy instruction.The study yielded insights about in-service teachers’ perceptions of the possibilities and potential barriers presented by DI in science.It is important to recognize that differentiated instruction is an approach to teaching, not simply a collection of strategies or activities.Effective differentiation requires ongoing evaluation of students' needs and conscious attention to designing instructional activities and assessment to meet those needs.Students use a wide range of strategies and variables to grasp the content such as reminder cards, charts, drawings, graphic organizers and so on. This article give some really great suggestions of ways to help ELL students find success.

Students cannot learn the same way since so many students come from various cultural backgrounds.

This checklist is a helpful reminder of ways in which teachers can tailor instruction and assessment to meet the individual needs of the student in order to demonstrate learning.

ELLs call attention to the incredible diversity that is characteristic of American schools in the 21st century. Differentiated instruction offers teachers an effective method of addressing the needs of this diverse population in a way that gives all students equal access to learning.

The best way to achieve that goal is through differentiated instruction that takes into account ELLs' English language proficiency, as well as the many other factors that can impact learning (Fairbairn & Jones-Vo, 2010).
